Return Trip to Bangkok - Day 1 (Friday, 23 August 2013)

Before I could finish up my previous entries for our last stay in Bangkok in July, we are back again on Aug 23 for yet another break. Yes, pangs of guilt overcame me for abandoning the kids yet again but I must say that the intensity diminishes with each recurrence. Our last trip a month ago was activity filled. We went to so many places and did so many things that we hardly had time to rest. This trip, rest and relax is the order of the day and for the entire trip. That's the plan anyway. No more shopping... just massage and good meals. So far, we've been pretty successful!

This was our first time flying Tigerair. It's basic alright. There is no aircon comfort of the aerobridge. You have to take a bus and board the plane via a mobile stair column. Punctuality is of the essence when taking Tiger because it takes awhile to get from the passenger terminal to the plane via the bus, depending on how far away the plane is parked.

Photography on the tarmac is prohibited. I was trying to sneak some shots as generics for the paper but that officer right in the middle in the background soon stopped me. At least I managed to get a couple of usable shots.

Love the little ships and the patterns on the water. Views from the top are really magnificent!

Window cleaners at Suvarnabhumi (prounounced Soo-wa-na-poom) Airport.

Getting stuck in Bangkok's infamous traffic jam.

Consolidating all our Baht.

It looks like a lot but it's probably less than SGD2000.

After checking in, we lazed about a bit then went to Som Tam Nua (above) again for lunch. We ordered the same dishes as the last time, except for the Laab Moo which was replaced with the fried fish. All the dishes were superbly tasty! The place was crowded as usual.

This is what the crowd there is like at meal times. This was shot on another occasion, not on the afternoon that we were there.

Hot and spicy crispy fish.

Northeast style spicy soup with pork bone.
We also ordered the fried chicken and the pork collar. The food is cheap and delicious!

After lunch, we took a walk to the newly refurbished Siam Center. It was closed for renovations when we were in BKK in Dec 2012, but was open when we visited last month. We didn't manage to visit the mall then but decided to walk off our lunch and check it out at the same time. We were pleasantly surprised. We used to skip Siam Center because it wasn't as interesting as the other malls.

Graffiti at the fringe of the worksite for the new mall next to Digital Gateway mall called Siam Square 1. The previous building was badly damaged by the last Red Shirt protests in 2010 which lasted a month. There is a massive new mall that's being built. I imagine it should be ready by middle next year.

Love their shoe colour combo!

Funky!

Their running slogan: Absolute SIAM

Atriums with cool seats.

They even have 3-D photography on their walls!

Stores with stylish decor...

Well designed, colourful furniture...

Our favourite restaurant also moved to the third floor with new decor.

Gotta try their new special menu...and get a few more stamps towards getting a VIP card!

A familiar name!

Shooting more pix to be used as generics in the future...

The decor looks good and it's airy, bright and inviting.

I for one am very happy to see Food Republic expand overseas...because I have a stake in the Breadtalk group!

The plaza that links Siam Center and Siam Paragon.

We headed to Siam Paragon to have dessert. Wanted to try this famous dessert place that the locals patronise. It's called "After You" but as usual, the line was super long and we didn't bother to wait. We've always wanted to try it. If the Thai's bother to line up, it must be good! We will try again on Monday afternoon.
We ended up at Vanilla Brasserie, which also has nice desserts and crepes.

Banana Cream Pie

Molten Chocolate Lava

After dessert, we went back to our room, set our barang down, freshened up and went for a massage! Ah...the good life! I almost feel guilty pampering myself! But that's just a fleeting moment and the thought disappears quickly enough. We went to a place called "Relax", a few doors away from Som Tam Nua at Siam Square, and I did an hour of back, shoulder and neck massage for 300B while MJ went for the 2-hr Thai massage. I was so tired that I fell asleep. The lady who tended to me was not bad, but her strength wasn't hard enough. I would've enjoyed a firmer and harder massage. After rejuvenating our body, we went to entertain our minds and watched R.I.P.D. or Rest in Peace Department, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges. It was hilarious and not a bad movie at all! We booked it blind and were pleasantly surprised.
We ended our night with dinner cum supper at a streetside stall serving wanton noodles. I read about it on someone's blog and we decided to try it since it was pretty late and the mall had closed. This place at Sukhumvit Soi 38 opens from 8pm til 2am so we knew it would be open.

View of the night food street at Sukhumvit Soi 38. The wanton noodle stall is on the little road to the right. It's a short street and the stall, run by two brothers, is on the inside right once you turn onto that street.

A view of the main street at Soi 38.

Here's the stall on the left. I'm shooting this from inside the small street, so the street you seen in the background is Soi 38.

The way it is served, with crab meat, char siew, wanton and lard.

The way I like it, minus the spring onions.

The wanton was sweet and just right in size, with not too much wanton skin.

Ah...satisfied...it's quite delicious. Just at 50 baht! We wil be back!

Just opposite the wanton stall is a mango dessert stall which has very nice mango with glutinous rice. A perfect way to end the meal.

The mango was very sweet. Nam Doc Mai (honey mango) no doubt! The yellow bits were crunchy. They look like uncooked tau suan! The coconut cream and the glutinous rice were just of the right texture and the rice was not hard. Deelish!

After supper, we took the BTS back to the hotel and SLEPT! Leading the decadent life! Luckily it's only temporary...
